![]() My 2004 X3 3.0 had a similar failure, but not the water pump but of the cooling system or more specifically, the plastic hoses BMW uses instead of rubber which again, my independent garage knew always failed at around 100K, which it did on my car, and my wife's 325i. They fixed it the next day (I am out of warranty) for around $2,400. It did the same thing on my trip back to my office which was when I called my independent garage and they knew exactly what it was. I just restarted the car (I had pulled off the freeway and parked when it was in limp home mode) and it started and ran normally so thought I'd continue my one hour each way, appointment, and see what happens. Called the dealer, no help, called my independent garage and they knew immediately it was the plastic electric water pump that failed. ![]() Just had my 2013 X3 35i plastic electric water pump replaced at around 53K when it went out on the freeway - no coolant dial overheat indication or steam - error message on the display and the car went into limp home mode. While inconvenient when this failure occurs, if one takes prompt action when the system alerts you to the problem the repair is usually limited to a replacement of the water pump and associated parts at a cost of roughly $1000. An extended warranty on the X3 with the N20 engine may be prudent depending upon your sensitivity to risk.Ī common problem reported with the N55 engine is a water pump failure. In this case a failure may lead to a $15,000 or $20,000 engine repair or replacement and may occur with little warning other than a possible change in engine noise. Most plastics when exposed to stress, heat and hydrocarbons are more prone to failure. The timing chain guide redesign in 2015 may have reduced or eliminated such failures, but it may be too early to be certain if this is the case. Most N20 engine timing chain failures reported appear to occur near the end of the warranty or outside of warranty after about 50,000 miles.
